Role

The Academic Advisor is primarily responsible for providing academic advisement to the general undecided student population. The Academic Advisor will create an environment for all students which foster and support retention and leads students to a timely graduation. Work in coordination with the Director of Enrollment Management, Office of the Registrar and the institution to insure students' progress toward degree.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

Acts as academic advisor for undergraduate students.

Prepare academic plans.

Advises students on their academic programs: makes interventions for student in difficulty.

Informs prospective students and their parents of the academic advantages and benefits of attending GCCC.

Maintain student records and monitor academic progress and performance of advisees.

Prepare reports, including statistical summaries of advising contacts.

Assist with and participate in all orientation, advising, and enrollment days.

Serve as resource to faculty, staff, and all students.

Participate in professional development and continuing education opportunities.

Provide leadership in the Student Advising Center, as needed.

Other related duties as assigned.

Ability to work collaboratively with a variety of diverse constituents including students, parents, faculty, and administrators.

Proficiency with use of technology such as the Internet, Email and MS Office Suite is essential to this position.

Experience

A minimum of two years (three years preferred) documented experience as a professional academic advisor in higher education. Demonstrated experience in developmental advising (or equivalent experience) at an accredited institution.

Education

Bachelor's degree in Higher Education, Counseling, or appropriate academic discipline.

Interpersonal Skills

A significant level of trust and diplomacy is required, in addition to normal courtesy and tact.

Work involves extensive personal contact with others and/or can be of a personal or sensitive nature.

Work may involve motivating or influencing others. Outside contacts become important and fostering

sound relationships becomes necessary and often requires the ability to influence others.

Other Skills

A bachelor's degree in sports management, physical education or related field. Master's degree

in related field preferred. Experience in academic discipline or higher education is desired.

Computer proficiency and familiarity with word-processing and database software is desired

(Microsoft Office products preferred). Excellent written, oral and interpersonal communication

skills are necessary. Ability to maintain confidential information in a professional manner is

required.

Physical Requirements

The work is mostly sedentary. Typically, the employee may sit comfortably to do the work. However, there may be some walking, standing, bending, carrying of light items, driving an automobile, etc. The employee may occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds.

Work Environment

Regular exposure to favorable conditions such as those found in a normal office.

Salary

Based on qualifications and experience.
