Assistant Dean, Diversity and Cultural Initiatives
The Michigan State University College of Human Medicine invites applications for the position of Assistant Dean for Diversity and Cultural Initiatives to provide programming, mentorship and coordination of diversity and cultural initiatives for medical students and faculty engaged in the Shared Discovery Curriculum. The Assistant Dean will join a team in the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (ODEI) to lead efforts to develop an intentional culture of inclusion and will help to envision a robust program of support for students from diverse backgrounds.
Michigan State University, the nations original land-grant university, provides a unique environment and wealth of resources including four health colleges (Human, Osteopathic, and Veterinary Medicine and Nursing) primarily located on the East Lansing campus. The College of Human Medicine is a community-based medical school with over 800 students training at campuses in seven communities across the state of Michigan (Flint, Grand Rapids, Lansing, Marquette, Midland, Traverse City, and Southeast Michigan). The first and second year medical students are trained exclusively in East Lansing and Grand Rapids.
The College has a diverse student body with a broad range of demographic backgrounds. Fifty-five percent (55%) are female; twenty three percent (23%) are from groups that are designated as under-represented in medicine (URiM); and seventeen percent (17%) are Asian Americans. There are significant numbers of students who are from first generation, disadvantaged, rural, and inner city backgrounds. Students have diverse religious backgrounds, gender identities, and gender orientations. The college also attracts a significant number of out of state students who want to train in a diverse learning environment where they can learn from colleagues and faculty from different backgrounds.
In 2016, the College of Human Medicine (CHM) implemented an innovative new curriculum, envisioned to be responsive to the needs of students and faculty in a new technological era and a new medical landscape. This new curriculum, the Shared Discovery Curriculum (SDC), provides integrated content organized around patient complaints and concerns. It is an experience-based curriculum where medical students learn by doing. The newly evolving SDC curriculum allows the broadest opportunity for the creation of curricular modules and experiences that will uniquely prepare all medical students for service to the underserved in keeping with the college mission. The SDC training sites have been selected to provide students access to a broader range of patients. There are very limited curricular anchors that ensure that students are developing culturally competent ways to interact with diverse patients. While over seventy percent (70%) of the SDC students report that their training sites have a diversity of patients, there is no accompanying educational content and/or training to prepare them to serve these populations. Simulation is a major component of the curriculum and there is a need to expand the diversity of the simulated patient models as well the faculty who evaluate students in simulation.
The Assistant Dean for Diversity and Cultural Initiatives provides leadership, management, and planning to improve the learning climate and to support an intentional culture of inclusion for students, faculty, and staff in support of the Colleges educational mission. The Assistant Dean will make contributions to health disparities education and research within his/her relevant clinical discipline. This position will be based in the Grand Rapids Campus and the Assistant Dean will have responsibilities that span the college system. The Assistant Dean for Diversity and Cultural Initiatives will report to the Senior Associate Dean for Diversity and Inclusion.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND FUNCTIONS
- Develop and implement new cultural initiatives for medical students that address the broad diversity of students and that positively improve the learning climate
- Review concerns raised by medical students regarding the learning climate and work with academic affairs and student affairs to systemically address concerns
- Provide appropriate diversity and inclusion training for the SDC faculty fellows and other faculty involved in SDC curriculum in coordination with the Director of the Academy and other academic administrators.
- Provide training in diversity and inclusion for Simulated Patients and Simulation Faculty Preceptors in coordination with the Director of Simulation
- Collaborate with Student Affairs to plan student orientation activities that address diversity, equity and inclusion.
- Collaborate and serve as a resource for academic, clinical, and administrative units to establish, coordinate, and assess unit level goals for diversity and inclusion.Work with the Senior Associate Dean for Diversity and Inclusion to develop appropriate advisory and affinity groups to serve the broad diversity of students and faculty
- Work with the Assistant Dean for Governmental and External Relations to build community partnerships with community organizations that serve diverse populations
- Work with the Director of Wellness, Resiliency and Vulnerable Populations and the Assistant Dean for Student Wellness and Engagement to provide culturally appropriate services for the diverse students
- Assist the Senior Associate Dean with supervising and providing appropriate oversight to ODEI faculty and staff
- Lead the evaluation of the effectiveness and communicate benchmarks and best practices of the cultural initiatives in the College.Participate in academic scholarship in health disparities education and research
- Connect medical students from diverse backgrounds to physicians in the area hospitals and community to expand mentorship options for students
- Serve as a member of the College Council on Diversity Education (CODE)
- Engage with existing resources at Michigan State University which address similar goals and issues.
- Serve as back-up for the Senior Associate Dean for Diversity and Inclusion as ex-officio member of the curriculum committee and the college advisory committee
The Assistant Dean will work in the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (ODEI). ODEI is a sub-unit within the College of Human Medicine Office of the Dean. The Assistant Dean will also work closely with senior college leadership and the community assistant deans. The Assistant Dean will be part of a team that develops and articulates a vision for all diversity, equity and inclusion in the college. The Assistant Dean for Diversity and Cultural Initiatives will bring strong leadership and innovative ideas to develop programs and activities to meet the professional development needs of the college faculty and students in diversity, equity, and inclusion.
The successful candidate must have a medical degree (M.D. or D.O.), and a record of scholarship that supports appointment as a faculty member. The Assistant Dean position will be a 75-80% appointment in the Deans Office and the remaining 20-25% will be flexible based on academic and/or clinical responsibilities of the candidate.
