Job Description

Our team is seeking to add an Automation Controls Specialist to its team in Richmond, VA. Under the direction of the Engineering & Maintenance Manager, the Automation Controls Technologist will plan, lead, organize and control activities of the Automation-Controls function which include design, selection, installation, development, and automation of equipment and processes to assure the efficiency and effectiveness of operations.


+ Leverage the Novelis Safety System and Safety Principles to create a zero injury culture.

+ Utilize the principle of continuous quality and reliability improvement on a routine basis.

+ Identify areas of potential improvement in the processes, equipment, and facilities to achieve increased profitability through reduced costs, increased throughput, improved quality, increased equipment uptime and market penetration.

+ Work closely with the Maintenance & Engineering Manager, develop conceptual and functional requirements for short and long term process and equipment development (facility planning) consistent with the business plan.

+ Assist in troubleshooting and addressing Site automation/control issues which impede the achievement of Site goals related to safety, quality, productivity, reliability and cost. Review related manuals, blueprints & schematic diagrams to determine specific tasks to be performed.

+ Assignment to an on-call rotation to provide after-hours and weekend support as required to assist maintenance in the troubleshooting and resolution of issues having an immediate impact on plant performance. This can involve providing direction/guidance remotely and/or onsite.

+ Review Site equipment and technology for robustness, reliability and obsolescence. Where necessary, develop plans for modifications and/or upgrades.

+ Compare alternatives and recommend to the Engineering/Maintenance Manager cost effective solutions for productivity, cost, quality, reliability, safety and environment improvements.

+ Develop cost estimates and schedules for Site capital projects.

+ Analyze projected financial impact of proposed process, equipment and facilities modifications.

+ Prepare and present robust capital expenditure requests, including sound financial analysis/justification, for management approval.

+ Manage the full scope of Automation-Controls projects including cost control, schedule, and compliance with safety and environmental requirements, to assure performance against expectations.

+ Develop, coordinate and manage external resources including contractors, vendors and engineering.

+ Participate as a member and/or leader in process development, continuous improvement and other problem-solving work teams as requested by Management.

+ Support Site as requested in a staff role by attending meetings and providing counsel.

+ Communicate both verbally and in writing to Site and group management to keep management informed of activities, potential issues and opportunities.

+ Develop personal training plan for professional and technical growth to stay current with state-of-the-art equipment and process development.

+ Functionally direct, lead and supervise maintenance technicians as necessary - to resolve and prevent maintenance and engineering problems and to develop training programs on processes and equipment for the maintenance staffs.

+ Provide technical consultation service to managerial staff.

+ Assist the Maintenance & Engineering Manager in developing the technical and process skills of the hourly maintenance crews.

+ Develop and maintain relationships with suppliers and other technical resources outside of the Site and Company

+ Provide functional and technical direction to plant maintenance and operating salary and hourly staffs.

Required Qualifications:

+ BS degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering technology, Automated or Application Engineering; or equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge and skills.

+ Excellent written and oral communication, interpersonal, and organization skills

+ Demonstrated experience in industrial electrical and controls maintenance.

+ 4 to 10 years of applicable experience in PLC System Automation.

+ 1 – 3 years of experience in aluminum (or similar industry) processing systems preferred.

+ Proven proficiency at Ladder Logic programming, I/O management, and troubleshooting.

+ Experienced in trouble shooting mechanical systems including pneumatics, tooling issues, measurement feedback systems, and basic design robustness.

+ Strong working knowledge of purchasing, PLC systems, hydraulics, pneumatics and overall machine design. Knowledge of SPC principles, tools, and techniques.

+ Basic understanding of capabilities for controls and servo systems, as well as tooling and fixture design.

+ An understanding of maintenance procedures and principles of equipment reliability. Good methodical aptitude for troubleshooting equipment and related issues.

+ Ability to perform CAD with AutoCad software.

+ Ability to interact with contractors, customers, employees, and government regulatory agencies at all levels.


Established in 1959 the Richmond facility utilizes unique pellet casting technology and a compacting mill to produce aluminum rolled sheet for the building and construction industry. The site utilizes recycled material to produce AA3025 and AA3105 mill finish sheet used in the manufacturing of gutters downspouts soffit fascia siding roofing panels window trim and pipe jacketing.
