Job Description

The purpose of the Continuous Improvement Manager is to drive continuous improvement and operational excellence initiatives throughout the organization.

  • Work with the management team to identify, define and prioritize improvement objectives, define action plans and support implementation and follow up.
  • Provide and implement continuous improvement methods and tools to assist personnel in the improvement of manufacturing and business processes and resolution of issues.
  • Play active leadership role in the development of a world class manufacturing facility, implementing standard work processes, lean manufacturing and decreasing complexity, defects and cycle time
  • Organize, schedule and manage Kaizen events to teach and motivate employees to attain breakthrough improvements, including defect and lead-time reduction.
  • Mentor, coach and train various levels throughout the organization in Lean techniques and John Cranes continuous improvement methodologies.
  • Develop and promote best practice sharing across Smiths Group.
  • Coordinate benchmarking and external analysis (Workshops, company visits, etc.).
  • Support and implement improvements by providing methods of evaluation, tracking and measuring of results.
  • Work closely with Finance to identify and track Continuous Improvement projects and the resulting benefits.
  • Undertake and lead specific projects as designated in support of business objectives
  • Follow all environmental requirements consistent with supporting the companys environmental performance goals.
  • Complete, and actively participate in all of the companys EHS training requirements
  • Other duties as required.
Position Requirements
  • Bachelor degree in Science or Engineering or experience equivalent to a four year college education.
  • Minimum 5 years experience in a leadership role in a manufacturing environment.

  • Results oriented, strong analytical skills, and demonstrated process improvement success in managing large teams in a continuous improvement culture.

  • Collaborative Leadership: Willingness to work on the shop floor and lead by example; ability to influence decision making with or without authority, facilitate groups with diverse perspectives and lead teams to reach agreement.
  • Must have a strong understanding of continuous improvement methodologies and techniques such as Lean manufacturing and Six Sigma.
  • Familiar with ISO 9001, API Q1 and ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001
  • Able to manage self and others to achieve challenging targets
  • Strong technical report writing and oral communication required
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office products
  • Must have valid driver license
Physical/Mental Requirements
  • Must be able to sit for extend periods of time; a minimum of 2 hours.
  • Must be able to maneuver to all areas of the office, shop, warehouse, or manufacturing plant
  • Must be able to lift up to 20 pounds and carry up to 10 pounds.
  • Must be able to bend, reach, kneel, twist, and grip items while working at assigned desk area.
  • Must have the manual dexterity and coordination to operate office equipment.
  • Must be able to simultaneously manage several objectives, changing priorities and reassign priorities to complete assignments.
  • Must be able to read, write, speak and understand English.
  • Must be able to respond to visual and aural cues.
EHS Requirements
  • Complete all work in a safe manner and follow all safety requirements consistent with supporting the Companys goals.
  • Lifting guidelines in accordance with the Manual Lifting Guidelines noted in the Safety Handbook.
  • Follow all environmental requirements consistent with supporting the companys environmental performance goals.
  • Complete, and actively participate in all other EHS training requirements
Work Environment

Work environment is typically considered within a Smiths location during normal or extended business hours to include offices, manufacturing plants and repair facilities. Work environment may also include customer sites including oil well sites, and meeting venues.

  • The noise level in the work environment is usually loud and approved PPE is required when on the factory floor
