NatureServe, a nonprofit conservation science and technology organization, provides the scientific basis for effective conservation action. With nearly 100 staff and an international network of over 80 natural heritage programs across the United States, Canada, and Latin America, we are the leading source of information on rare and endangered species and threatened ecosystems. We provide information and tools to conservation groups, government agencies, corporations, academia, and the public to help them make informed decisions about managing our natural resources. NatureServe holds a unique niche, by providing scientifically sound guidance for major conservation investments across the hemisphere.

SUMMARY OF JOB:

The Director of Development is an essential member of the Office of the President, and a key participant in the NatureServe Executive Team. The Director of Development leads the growth and implementation of NatureServe's overall philanthropic strategy, guides donor cultivation priorities and assists the CEO and other senior staff in developing high-level donor relationships consistent with the organization's strategic plan. A particular focus of the position will be expanding private philanthropic support for the organization's domestic and international activities.

The Director of Development will work closely and collaboratively with other members of the Executive Team to develop a thorough knowledge of NatureServe's products and services so that s/he can develop the most effective strategies to build support for mission critical activities.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

* Advance and sustain a fundraising strategy consistent with NatureServe's mission, values, and strategic goals.

* Develop and implement an annual fundraising plan, which results in the attainment of the annual fundraising goal.

* Support and advise the CEO, the Board of Directors, and other senior staff on cultivation and solicitation of major donor prospects and take the lead on fostering relationships with selected donors.

* Foster a culture of collaboration with other senior staff in the coordination of fundraising activities.

* Research and oversee cultivation and solicitation strategies for the most promising individual, foundation, and corporate giving prospects, with an emphasis on generating unrestricted support.

* Direct the creation of a highly effective donor recognition program.

* Research and review letters of inquiry, grant proposals, and donor reports. Take the lead in writing and submitting selected proposals, especially for unrestricted, annual support and corporate sponsorships.

* Oversee the planning and execution of fundraising-oriented special events.

* Report to the CEO and the Board of Directors on fundraising targets and keep managers abreast of important fundraising or reporting deadlines.

* Supervise staff and manage budgets related to the fundraising team.

* Recommend fundraising policies and procedures, and ensure ethical compliance, as defined by the Association for Fundraising Professionals and our donor bill of rights.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS:

* Proven track record in fundraising for nonprofit organizations, including experience representing the organization to external audiences and donors.

* Bachelor's degree in a communications-related field, marketing, or nonprofit management and five years of related work experience or 10 years of equivalent experience'including at least 2 years at a supervisory and management level.

* Knowledge of current trends in charitable giving and skill in helping to expand a donor base, particularly among individuals.

* Excellent interpersonal communication skills, energy, and enthusiasm with the ability to build long-term relationships. These skills include advanced oral and written persuasion skills, effective listening, and discretion.

* Supervisory experience must include managing staff, budgeting, program planning, and other administrative responsibilities.

* Ability to organize teams of individuals from different programs who are not under his/her direct supervision and motivate and lead them in successfully completing fundraising goals.

* Ability to stay focused and maintain composure handling multiple deadlines in a fast-paced environment

PREFERRED SKILLS:

* Experience with implementing a wide range of fundraising approaches including planned giving, major gifts, corporate giving, event sponsorships, writing grants and annual giving.

* Experience fundraising for conservation or science-based organizations.

* Experience working with Board of Directors of nonprofit organizations, including the ability to present fundraising performance information.

* Experience securing funds for work outside the U.S.

* Ability to speak and write in Spanish.

* Commitment to conservation.

ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

* Ability to travel independently to attend meetings.

* Ability to converse verbally and in writing with donors, prospects, and other business partners.

* Ability to maintain a full-time position with some extended hours required to travel and attend donor events.

* Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading.
