Job Description

Position Title: Curriculum Council Chair (non-release)

Department: Academics and Accountability

Reports to: Curriculum Managers

General Function:

The Curriculum Council Chairperson will work collaboratively with Cincinnati Public Schools Administrators, Representatives of the Cincinnati Federation of Teachers, teachers, and other support staff working in the Cincinnati Public Schools to ensure the integrity of curriculum, standards and assessments to meet requirements established by the aforementioned parties and the State of Ohio to instruct students within the district.


* Teachers with CPS Lead Teacher credentials will be considered first.

* The applicant is currently teaching in the content area represented by the appropriate council.

* Master's degree or certification in content area preferred.

Skills and Knowledge

* Strong communication and interpersonal skills

* Ability to work well within a team

* Prior experience as an active participant on Cincinnati Public School Committee(s) preferred.

* The applicant should have experience in the use of instructional/educational technology.

* The applicant should be a current member of state and/or national organization(s) in the content area.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

* Works cooperatively with the appropriate Cincinnati Public School Administrators, Curriculum Council and Consultants in the assembling of working committees to:

* Assist in the development, implementation and evaluation of subject area curriculum documents,

* Assist in selecting, integrating, and evaluating instructional materials,

* Support the implementation of professional development for teaching staff, and

* Review district data to inform decision-making.

* Assists the Curriculum Department in the development of rigorous lessons incorporating research-based instructional strategies.

* Collaborates with the Curriculum Department with the development of sound instructional programs.

* Assists with the annual review of content standards, assessments and model curricula.

* Recommends professional development opportunities based on data and research-based best practices.

* Works with Curriculum Council and appropriate CPS administrator(s) to ensure that curriculum is available and modified on a yearly basis.

* Convenes and conducts regular meetings with teacher delegates to develop and maintain high quality curriculum and assessment practices.

* Promotes involvement of teachers in local, state and national professional associations.

* Serves as an advocate, resource and mentor for teachers at all grade levels.

* Participates on local, state, and national educational initiatives and/or committees.

* Works with other chairpersons on interdisciplinary efforts and visions.

* Names teachers, through CFT, to textbook selection committees and to committees that develop revisions of curriculum and assessment instruments.

* Communicates with teachers about effective teaching practices, research and new developments.

* Communicates with professional organizations.

* Works collaboratively to plan PD activities for the curriculum council meetings.

* Plans and facilitates monthly council meetings and steering committee meetings.

* Researches and write resolutions on issues of direct concern to the council.

* Attends Interdisciplinary Curriculum Council meetings.

* Presents resolutions to the Interdisciplinary Council and/or to EIP.

* Works with the Curriculum Council secretary sending out notices for meetings and the minutes of the meetings.
