Engineering Program Manager

Duties and Responsibilities:

* Active and effective member of a cross-functional product team that includes engineering peers in software management and technology development.

* Responsible for development of new product and/or new revisions of existing product.

* Plan for and manage personnel resources for engineering projects related to assigned products. Work with engineering group/functional managers to procure resources.

* Manage all technical / engineering work related to assigned products. Understand all technical aspects of assigned products to effectively optimize development activities, minimize risk, ensure complete and solid designs, ensure complete validation and verification criteria, and ensure prudent technical and design decisions. Product manager may collaborate with a lead engineer on these activities.

* Manage projects related to assigned products, balancing requirements, budget, and schedule.

* Develop project requirements. Support Product Requirements Document and Market Requirements Specification creation.

* The Engineer Product Manager is the hub for all hardware engineering development activities related to his or her assigned products.

* Ensure alignment of engineering deliverables through coordination with the Software Engineering Product Manager.

* Provide vision and innovative product and feature ideas to maximize the sales and customer-satisfaction impact of assigned products. Also, seek and incorporate vision and ideas from others.

* Manage products through the product development cycle, which includes:

* Concept phase including task, project and/or product charter.

* Feasibility phase including feasibility studies and project proposal, schedule, and budget.

* Prototype phase including production and supplier planning.

* Alpha and beta phases including customer validation.

* Release phase including product design transfer and release (see below).

* Sustaining engineering and end of life.

* Responsible for managing product release activities directly or through engineer and project manager designees. Activities include:

* Work with Manufacturing and Purchasing to select and qualify vendors.

* Management and creation of product BOMs (bill of material)

* Assembling Engineering Change Request documentation packets.

* Lead transfer of new products from Engineering to Production.

* Ensure creation of customer documentation through the technical publication group.

* Creation of product verification reports.

* Manage exceptions to product input requirements through continuous improvement project plans.

* Manage engineering tool and test stand asset scheduling, prioritization and escalation.

* Improve product reliability.

* Monitor, catalogue, organize, and respond to all forms of quality feedback (customers, tech support, production, engineering). Includes complaints, feature requests, competitive comparisons, etc.

* Assign, prioritize, and manage resources to correct defects.

* Manage assigned product defect queues.

* Ensure product verification testing working with Project, Equipment and Test Engineering group.

* Ensure product verification and validation.

* Review and align engineering projects with product-marketing materials and commitments.

* Create and maintain product documentation (tech. pubs documentation).

* Coordinate with Operations, Purchasing, and Manufacturing management to improve profit margin.

* Eliminate waste, reduce build times and improve systems.

* Minimize BOM costs.

* Provide quality improvement results to quality team (PQT).

* Coordinated product activities with activities of regulatory and compliance agencies (SEMI Compliance, CE Compliance, end-user EHS compliance).

* Participate in various agency audits to achieve product compliance certification.

* Mentor more junior-level product managers.

* Some travel required, including international.

Education/Experience:

* BS in ME, EE, CS, CSE, Physics or equivalent technical degree or experience.

* Minimum five years year of hands-on technical project management experience.

* Interaction with customers, sales, service or other field organizations preferred.

* Demonstrated hardware systems engineering expertise.

* MBA a plus but secondary to strong and broad technical expertise.

Skills:

* A broad engineering background. Multi-discipline background including systems engineering is highly desirable. Direct exposure to software development a strong plus.

* Demonstrated ability managing multi-discipline engineering projects required.

* Demonstrated ability to manage design and deployment of reliable products.

* An understanding of how to manage and balance product costs, schedule, and features.

* Mature and solid project management skills, including strong organizational and planning skills.

* Mature and solid consensus and team-building skills.

* Demonstrated strong verbal and written communication skills.

* A passion for solving complex problems with creative, innovative, elegant solutions

* Travel to US, Europe or Asia 10%.
