**About this role**

The Infection Control Nurse (RN) is responsible for evaluating, planning, and coordinating healthcare services for patients, or segments of patients suspected or proven to have an infectious or communicable disease. This position is expected take a proactive approach to preventing disease and the spread of disease. The Infection Control Nurse interfaces with medical and nursing staff, security staff at all levels, administrative staff, and the QI committee.

**What you bring to the table**


+ Bachelor of Science in Nursing from an accredited school of nursing.

+ Current certification in Infection Prevention preferred or accomplishment within two years of date of employment.


+ Minimum of 3 years’ experience in nursing or infection prevention required, preferably in a hospital setting.

+ Teaching experience, experience in development, ability to implement and evaluate programs, working knowledge of hospital asepsis, microbiology, epidemiology and methods of operating required.


+ Currently licensed as a RN in the state of employment.

+ Possess and maintain current CPR certification.

**What you will do**

+ Develop, maintain, and secure employee medical files which include annual TB testing, employee injury documentation and Worker’s Compensation benefits, Hepatitis-B administration and tracking, relevant immunization tracking, and fit testing for appropriate apparatus, etc.

+ Maintain OSHA 300 log and ensure Medical Unit remains OSHA compliant through coordinated and routine inspections and have skills at capturing and analyzing data and preparing reports.

+ Manage all practical aspects of the Infection Disease Program that includes but is not limited to: Conducting contact investigations for verified infectious diseases within the facility. Working in collaboration with community Health Department professionals to prevent, control the spread, and treat infectious diseases in accordance with all laws and contractual obligations.

+ Maintain necessary infectious disease tracking systems (i.e., MRSA, Hepatitis, communicable diseases)

+ Monitor medication compliance as directed by the Medical Director.

+ Track all HIV infected patients and ensure appropriate disease education is provided, compliance with medication occurs (and if not occurring, that it is reported), and that the physician is made aware of any clinical concerns.

+ Ensure all aspects of the TB Program are achieved including: All new patients receive a PPD test.All PPD tests are read and recorded within an appropriate timeframe. Prepare and maintain monthly prevalence reports including positives, previous positives, chest X-rays, etc. Ensure that appropriate follow-up occurs for patients with positive PPD tests. Track the use of INH.

+ Collaborate with the security personnel to conduct facility safety and sanitation inspections, and complete reports with findings and suggested corrective actions.

+ Assist with new employee orientation and existing staff in-services related to relevant infection control information and topics.

+ Be vigilant hospital wide about breeches in policy or potential threats to patient health.

+ Work independently, organize work and set priorities.

+ Reviews lab cultures and sensitivity reports daily; examines data and studies situations to identify potential infection prevention risks.

+ Identifies infections, determines whether they are Present on Admission (POA) or hospital acquired and develops and implements an action plan for reducing incidences where possible.

+ Collects, analyzes and disseminates surveillance data; compiles monthly statistics and compares our data to NHSN or other benchmarks, and provides reports for leadership and the Infection Prevention Committee.

+ Works collaboratively with the nurse educator to support employee health with focus on prevention and reduction of infection among employees and patients.

+ Provides consultation on infection control issues and is able to apply appropriate criteria for identifying hospital acquired infections.

+ Provides continuous and ongoing education both for hospital and the community.

+ Conducts on-site visits to investigate situations presenting infection prevention risks and seeks resolution and provides timely information regarding investigations to the department manager, epidemiologist, infection control committee, and others as appropriate.

+ Consultation, Observation, and Education: Serves as an epidemiology resource and educator for employees, the medical staff, nurses and health care students, volunteers, patients, and community by providing orientation and ongoing infection prevention information and programs and reviewing and revising infection prevention related educational materials.

+ Conducts regular IC surveillance rounds and provides appropriate leaders reports of findings; provides appropriate, accurate information and guidance on infection prevention issues in a timely manner.

+ Determines the need for and conducts infection prevention investigations. Inspects construction and renovation sites to assess IC risks and to assure compliance with infection prevention policies.

+ In cooperation with the hospital epidemiologist and the department manager, prepares agendas and reports for the Infection Control Committee. Demonstrates the ability to appropriately prioritize issues/topics for discussion. Identifies pertinent data and prepares accurate, concise reports, including appropriate charts and graphs.

+ Makes recommendations regarding products and procedures for cleaning, disinfection, and sterilization to minimize the transmission of infectious diseases. Assists in the development of new guidelines, policies and procedures and in review, revision/updating of current policies and procedures based on current literature, regulatory agencies, and data generated through surveillance.

+ Researches appropriate sources of information when making recommendation regarding products and developing policies and procedures for cleaning, disinfection, and sterilization.

+ Assists groups involved with the development/revision of policies and procedures by providing current, concise, and relevant infection prevention information, trends, concerns, and data.

+ Provides appropriate consultation/information/assistance for the development and implementation of emergency plans related to potential influx of infectious patients.

+ In collaboration with the Employee Health Dept., the hospital medical director, and the Infection Control Committee, assist in resolving issues related to employee infectious diseases and their exposure to infections. In cooperation with the Employee health Department maintains current, written protocols for disease specific employee issues and current disease-specific exposure guidelines for the hospital healthcare workers.

+ Works effectively with Employee Health dept. personnel in identifying and resolving employee related infection prevention issues and recommending process improvements as appropriate.

+ Ensures compliance with The Joint Commission Infection Prevention accreditation requirements.

+ Ability to handle unexpected situations calmly and in a professional manner.

+ Serve as the Facility expert on universal control, exposure control, and blood-borne pathogen techniques.

+ Provide security personnel in-service training related to certain infection control topics.

+ Become and remain familiar with the Facilities Disaster/Emergency Plan and take an active role in the management effort to control potential outbreak of infectious disease.

+ Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills and is proficient in the use of computers including MS Office applications.

+ Must be able to apply principles of critical thinking to a variety of practical and emergent situations and accurately follow standardized procedures that may call for deviations.

+ Must be able to apply sound judgment beyond a specific set of instructions and apply knowledge to different factual situations.

+ Must be alert at all times; pay close attention to details.

+ Must be able to work under stress on a regular or continuous basis.

+ Perform other duties as assigned.
