Job Description


The Medication Safety and Quality Pharmacy Coordinator will develop and management of the hospitals quality improvement programs, regulatory compliance and staff development. They are responsible for the planning and coordination of adverse drug event reporting, leadership role in reduction of medication error risks and error reporting. The position will assess and coordinate all regulatory readiness with the pharmacy managers. The position collaborates with other health care providers with medication related responsiblies to measure and improve the safety of the organizations medication system. The person plays a role in educating staff, students and residents on medication safety.


* Maintains and coordinates an active and progressive quality improvement program consistent with the goals of the department and health system including development and assessment of the pharmacy quality program. Assesses departmental compliance with quality indicators through reports and audits of processes based on these indicators. Alerts pharmacy leadership to significant problems identified during audits. Provides action plans for improvement strategies.

* Coordinates medication system monitoring program for all steps in the medication process including auditing, evaluation and feedback; process improvement recommendations and staff education initiatives.

* Reviews medication error/adverse event data, literature and the Institute of Safe Medication Practices to proactively address potential issues in the medical center.

* Reviews and reports medication occurrence reports and adverse drug reactions reports for trends and reporting to the medication safety committee.

* Chairs the medication safety committee and teams as needed

* Performs FMEA's or RCA's in coordination with risk management or medical staff office to improve medication processes.

* Provides medication safety information and staff education and provide inservices as needed.

* Develops a structured approach to teaching pharmacy staff, students and residents as related to medication safety incorporating the goals and objectives of the department. This will include developing and participating a pharmacy residency rotation

* Participates in call in the rotation with other pharmacy managers and supervisors.

* Interviews, selects, hires, and retains employees

* Ensures orientation and training for employees

* Manages performance

* Executes progressive discipline up to and including termination

* Performs compliance requirements as outlined in the Employee Handbook

* Manages front line operations of area of accountability related to meeting/exceeding departmental goals, 5 keys of excellence, DCH Mission and Vision.

DCH Standards:

* Performs compliance requirements as outlined in the Employee Handbook

* Must adhere to the DCH Behavioral Standards including creating positive relationships with patients/families, coworkers, colleagues and with self.

Pharm.D. or B.S. Degree in Pharmacy. Residency required. Pharmacy Board Certification or experience in medication safety preferred.. Must be currently licensed or license eligible to practice pharmacy in the State of Alabama. Requires history of, and demonstration of, effective verbal and written communication skills. Requires good organizational and time management skills. Participation in professional organizations is strongly encouraged. Must be able to operate computer, calculator, telephone, and other related pharmaceutical equipment. Must be able to read, write legibly, speak, and comprehend English.
