The Section of Neurosurgery in the Department of Surgery is seeking an experienced, licensed Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner to join a team of six advanced practice providers, along with attending neurosurgeons and resident physicians, to provide primary, inpatient coverage to patients admitted to the neurosurgery service. This position involves caring for pre- and postoperative neurosurgical patients admitted to the ICU, step-down unit, and general surgical wards. In addition to overseeing the care of the inpatient service, the NP/PA will be responsible for providing neurosurgery consults in the Emergency Department and on other medical/surgical services as needed. The ideal candidate will have experience in neurosurgery or another high-acuity surgical specialty and be able to work independently in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.
At the direction of the Section Chief, the Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner will provide health care including the assessment of physical and psychosocial status, health history, physical examination and diagnostic tests, interpretation of data, implementation of therapeutic plans and follow-through as needed, and writing of H&Ps and daily progress notes. The Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner will also provide health education and counseling to patients and/or family members and assist with the integration of care by other providers and make appropriate referrals to other services as indicated. Experience with ICP, EVD, and lumbar drain management, suturing, drain removal, and wound care strongly preferred.
This is a full-time, salaried, benefited position. This position schedule is three 13 hour evening shifts a week and evenings assigned will vary.An academic appointment at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth will be requested.
Current (or eligible) certification to practice as a Physician's Assistant or Advanced Practice Nurse in the state of New Hampshire. Academic preparation at the Master's level.
Demonstrated understanding of biochemistry and specialty knowledge of the management of patients with neurosurgical disorders. At minimum, two years of previous experience in neuroscience acute care/critical care is required.
