Job Description

The Nursing House Supervisor is a Registered Nurse, currently licensed to practice nursing in the State of Florida. The House Supervisor is responsible for promoting and maintaining quality patient care through effective management of the activities of the total patient care services during his/her assigned shift. In the absence of Administrative staff, the House Supervisor has the authority and responsibility for specific decisions to maintain a functional facility and will make appropriate notification of on-call Administrative staff.


Education:


Graduate of accredited school of nursing Associate or Bachelor of Science


Experience:


Minimum experience six months to a year, depending on previous experience and unit need. One year experience as nurse manager or charge nurse preferred.


Licenses, Certifications and/or Registrations:


Current registration to practice nursing as a Registered Nurse


BCLS


ACLS


Specialized Knowledge and Skills:


Management/Leadership skills, Customer Service Skills, Clinical Skills


Carries out hospital/nursing policies, procedures and standards, and uses good judgment in ensuring adherence to established hospital policies and procedures.


Continuously evaluates staffing needs, resolving problem areas and communicating to the DON any unresolved issues.


Keeps the DON, his/her representative and/or Administrator informed regarding circumstances or situations which may have a serious impact.


Visits all patient care units to ascertain condition of patients, evaluate staffing needs and provide support to caregivers.


Assist nursing units during peak activity levels to optimize standard of patient care, i.e. patient assessments, IV therapy, patient transport, etc.


Assists ancillary departments to ensure safe and appropriate patient procedures, i.e. assist radiology with trauma patients.


Administers the effective distribution and utilization of personnel employed during the respective shift.


Able to perform all duties/roles of any nursing unit. Performs these duties to standard as noted in the job description.


Participates and assists in the planning and providing of in-service education programs within the hospital, and orientation of new associates.


Investigates complaints of patients, visitors, physicians, and associates. Resolves issues or refers to higher authority.


Monitors MSE screening process in the Emergency Department and assists staff in resolving issues.


Knowledgeable in Interqual admission criteria. Anticipates appropriate admissions and works closely with ED physicians to encourage compliance.


Coordinates admissions, discharges and transfers from nursing units and makes appropriate bed assignments to meet the need of the patient.


Coordinates return calls to On-call Maintenance staff during off hours. Makes automatic call back for critical operation of facility, i.e. power failure and fire alarm, or notifies Administrative on-call member to determine call-back need.


Associate performs within the prescribed limits of the Corporate Compliance Program. Is responsible to detect, observe and report compliance variances to their immediate supervisor, or, upward through chain of commence, or Compliance Officer.


Effectively and consistently communicates administrative directives to personnel.


Assumes the duties as outlined in the Life Safety/Emergency Management Manual if conditions present.


Follows Pharmacy protocols for obtaining drugs when the Pharmacist is unavailable.


Performs security rounds throughout facility at least every two hours.


Follows appropriate procedure to obtain supplies after hours.


Adheres to the NFCH infection control policies and procedures.


Promotes positive guest relations in dealing with patients, visitors, outside persons, physicians and associates as outlined and evaluated in the Service Standards.


Observes hospital and departmental appearance and dress code. Encourages departmental dress code policies for other units.


Observes hospital smoking policy.


Maintains patient confidentiality at all times.


Participates in ED chart reviews to determine appropriate documentation and charge levels.


Participates in chart audits to determine appropriate documentation and compliance with standard of patient care.


Participates in and plans for JCAHO, Performance Improvement, and Staff Education.
