JOB TITLE: Research Assistant for Native American Art DEPARTMENT: Curatorial Department, Arts of Africa, Oceania, and the Indigenous Americas REPORTS TO: Head of Arts of Africa, Oceania, and the Indigenous Americas

CLASSIFICATION: Full-Time, Non-Exempt, Temporary


Under the supervision of the Head of Arts of Africa, Oceania, and the Indigenous Americas and the guidance of the Assistant Curator of Native American Art, the research assistant will conduct object and provenance research for the Native American collections.


+ Research and compile scholarship on the Native American collections at the DIA.

+ Update files and documents pertaining to the collections.

+ Contact scholars, collectors, and museums for information as necessary

+ Perform other duties as assigned.



Masters degree in a relevant field, including art history or anthropology required. One year of museum, university, or art gallery experience is required. Experience with collections management software, especially The Museum System (TMS) and design programs desirable. Additional years of experience may be substituted for degree requirement.


+ Demonstrated research skills and organizational abilities.

+ Ability to multi-task

+ Excellent written and oral communication skills required.

+ Knowledge of and familiarity with the Native American Graves and Repatriation Act.

+ Must be able to work effectively with tribes, scholars, museum patrons, and volunteers.

+ Ability to work occasional weekend and evening hours for special events (If needed).

+ Must be proficient in latest version of Office 365, including SharePoint, Word, Power Point, Outlook, and Excel.

+ Must have proficiency in the use of remote work technology such as scheduling with, connecting to, and using digital collaboration platforms such as Microsoft Teams.

+ Must be able to establish and maintain professional, productive, and courteous interactions that promote positive teamwork. This encompasses going beyond giving and receiving instructions and includes but is not limited to (a) performing work activities requiring interacting or speaking with others; and (b) responding appropriately to constructive feedback or suggestions for improvement from a supervisor.
