Job Title: Senior Software Engineer
Location: REI; City: Telecommuting within normal commuting distance of Seattle, WA is required, with at least monthly in-person meetings at Seattle-area REI offices.
Job Description: Analyze, design, develop, implement, document and maintain applications systems, working on moderately complex to highly complex work tasks or project assignments. Gather, analyze and translate business and non-functional requirements into a solution design. May lead meetings to define business requirements and technical solutions. Manage tasks, estimate resources, establish timelines and prioritize work. Design, develop to specifications and maintain application code in accordance with the current development and project management methodologies and practices. Manage work assignments according to current project methodologies or as directed. Prepare required documentation for the portion of work assigned. Consult with Quality Assurance and business analysts in the development and execution of test plans. Provide technical assistance and problem resolution for assigned systems. Lead resolution of production support problems in accordance with problem management policies and procedures. Lead resolution of production support incidents in accordance with incident management policies and procedures. Coordinate with vendors for problem resolution and change requests. Ensure applications changes follow change management policies and procedures. Provide technical guidance to ensure that installed systems are working effectively and that proposed systems will meet organization’s future needs. Prepare periodic and ad hoc status reports for each assignment for department manager and project manager. Identify and provide recommendations for system process improvements. May act as a source for direction, training and guidance for less experienced departmental staff. Some telecommuting within normal commuting distance of Seattle, WA is required, with at least monthly in-person meetings at Seattle-area REI offices. Must participate in 24/7 on-call rotation for incident response.

Job Requirements: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, or a closely related field, or the foreign degree equivalent; and 5 years of progressive, post-baccalaureate engineering experience with large-scale web applications as a Java backend engineer including the following: 5 years working with build tools such as Maven, Gradle or Ant; 5 years working with source/version control systems such as Git, SVN or CVS; 5 years of experience utilizing knowledge of professional software engineering practices & best practices for the full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations, as well as 2 years of experience using agile development methodologies; 5 years of experience communicating with users, other technical teams, and management to collect requirements, and describe software product features/technical designs; 3 years writing unit tests with frameworks such as Junit, TestNG, or similar; 3 years writing unit tests with mocks utilizing mocking frameworks such as Mockito or Easymock; 3 years designing and building RESTful APIs with tools such as JAX-RS, RestEasy, Spring RestTemplate, Spring RestController, or similar; 2 years writing code leveraging Spring MVC, Spring Boot, or Spring Framework; 2 years working with CI/CD pipelines; and 2 years writing persistence layer code with JPA, Hibernate, Spring Data, or similar. Experience taking at least one project from scoping requirements through actual launch of the project. Experience may be gained concurrently.
