Essential Duties

The New Hanover County Tax Department is currently seeking a Residential Appraiser to appraise residential property using approved schedules, standards, and rules which apply to mass appraisal for property-tax purposes where duties include responding to inquiries; explaining policies and procedures to the public; supporting assessed values; conducting informal hearings on challenges of values; and entering data into the appraisal system; performs sales verifications duties and audits sales information for CAMA systems; makes recommendations to the Board of Equalization and Review; and assists in the training of new employees.

This position requires pre-employment skills testing as part of the hiring process. Selected applicants are required to complete the assessment to be considered for this position. After the closing date for this position applications will be screened by Human Resources.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma/GED, supplemented by either of the following: 1 year experience as a county tax appraiser; or 1 year experience in a revaluation firm coordinating projects or assigning grades, conditions, and effective age; or completion of residential and commercial appraisal courses (R-1, R-2, R-3 and G-1) plus 18 months experience as a fee appraiser having completed 100 appraisals.

Applicants who do not meet the minimum may be considered at a trainee rate until they have completed one year as a county tax appraiser.


* Valid NC Driver's License and good driving record at application.

* Residential Appraisal Certification by NC Department of Revenue within two years of employment.

Other Information

Hours: 8AM-5PM weekdays; possible flex schedule; must be available during emergency situations.
