This position reports to the President/CEO and serves as Southwest Key advocate and subject matter expert on policy and government issues affecting the organization. In addition to direct advocacy responsibilities, the position manages and oversees all initiatives and programs under Governmental Affairs Department and coordinates activities of the Governmental Affairs Committee. The key to this position is building and maintaining strong relationships with governmental leaders on local, state, and federal levels.
+ Develop and direct Southwest Key Government Affairs Department.
+ Guide and develop the Southwest key annual legislative priorities, which includes policy positions at the local, state, and federal levels. Inform, educate, and update our members on important issues through events, workshops, conferences, and other sources as needed.
+ Manage the organizational strategic planning activities and work with the CEO and Board of Directors to set SWKs short and long-term policy agenda and legislative
+ Track and advocate on local/state/federal level the bills, amendments, activities, and actions related and important to Southwest Key political objectives.
+ Maintain and strengthen relationships with key elected officials, their staff, and regulators to effectively promote Southwest Key agenda.
+ Represent Southwest Key in government meetings and act as liaison between government officials and SWK staff/leadership.
+ Monitor and analyze key legislative, judicial, and political developments and trends affecting SWK’ s key issue areas, identify opportunities for engagement and collaboration with key
+ Evaluates pending legislation and regulations that may Southwest Key in close consultation with the CEO and Board of Directors, to develop recommendations and prepare communications for senior management.
+ Assist the Board of Directors and the CEO in working with key stakeholders, including policymakers, coalition partners, researchers, and advocates to identify policy opportunities and develop, refine, and advance SWK’s policy
+ Coordinate annual “Legislative Wrap Up” event to inform members of progress on Southwest Key governmental priorities.
+ Provide input and feedback on SWK’s advocacy responses regarding proposed rules, policies, initiatives, and other administrative proposals, as well as attending negotiated rulemaking sessions and summarize key aspects for

+ BA/BS required with a minimum of ten (10) years’ experience as a government relations executive, a Congressional staffer, or as a senior public servant in a relevant government agency, department, or business.
+ Strong political skills, including knowledge of political campaigns and fundraising.
+ Acute political sensitivity.
+ Knowledge and ability to appropriately influence the political/policy process, including working with and managing consultants and lobbyists
+ Superior analytical and strategic thinking skills.
