## Position Description

Work at the physical layer to design waveforms and signal detection / demodulation methods that can be used in custom RF communications systems. Work with a team of engineers to implement and deliver these new capabilities.
Duties (Listed in order of importance with the estimated amount of time spent at each task):
1. Engage with APL sponsors to understand their critical challenges and how APL can invest resources to address these challenges. (5%)
2. Stay informed on state-of-the-art waveform design and implementation techniques to inform system architecture and implementation decisions.(5%)
3. Work with teams of software and hardware engineers to design custom RF communications systems to meet critical sponsor needs. (50%)
4. Design and implement waveform, signal detection, and feature extraction algorithms in software. (25%)
5. Participate in system field tests to evaluate performance of systems being designed. (10%)
6. Document approaches and results for internal and external sponsor review. (5%)

Doctoral degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or equivalent.
Demonstrated ability to design waveforms and signal processing techniques for RF communication systems in real-world environments. Experience with developing algorithms using scripting languages such as MATLAB. Software development experience in implementing algorithm and signal processing code in C++, C, C#, Java, Python, or equivalent. Demonstrated ability to work with non-technical sponsors and form effective system requirements from descriptions of technical challenges. Ability to work effectively as part of a team with diverse technical backgrounds.
Experience with software defined radio architectures and experience prototyping and testing communications systems using open source SDR tools such as GNU Radio. Familiarity with test equipment used in the development of RF communications systems. Demonstrated ability to lead a technical team in full RF communication system development.
**Special Working Conditions:** Limited travel required. Must be eligible for DOD clearance requiring background investigation and/or CI polygraph. Preference for current SSBI.
**Security:** Applicant selected will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.
